St. Paul's United Methodist adding a labyrinth
published Jul. 11, 2011
Builders recently began laying down a 50-foot-wide spiritual labyrinth in the front yard of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in the museum district.
The labyrinth, built by Illinois-based company Labyrinths in Stone, will not be a walled maze, but a path created with an intricate pattern of paving stones. People in many cultures, including Christianity, have used labyrinths for centuries as a meditative and spiritual tool.
"When you're really in it, you just kind of shut everything else down," says church spokesperson Donna Adair. "You're in a meditative mood."
Adair isn't sure yet when the labyrinth will be completed, but the builders have already created some elaborate patterns with different colors of paving stones.
"They are still working on putting the outer rings together," she says.
The church will hold a dedication ceremony once the labyrinth is completed, and Adair adds that it won't be just for St. Paul's parishioners.
"By installing the labyrinth where it is on our front yard, facing Main and Museum of Fine Arts Houston, we're extending an invitation to the community to walk it and feel welcome," she says.
The church is taking donations for the labyrinth and posting photos of construction progress here.
