High-school students build bridges quickly at Rice program

published Jul. 15, 2011

High-school students at Rice University's Explore Engineering Day Camp had just one hour Thursday to construct bridges and see how many textbooks they could hold.

The 26 students split up into five teams after Rice professor Jamie Padgett gave them a 30-minute rundown of the basics of engineering a bridge. The students built their bridges out of K'nex construction toys.

All five of the bridges were able to hold at least 12 pounds of textbooks. Each bridge was judged on the ratio of maximum weight held to pieces used.

The winning team comprised three students from YES Prep, and one from St. John's School. This bridge held 31.2 pounds of books and used 59 pieces. Another bridge held 45 pounds, but used more pieces and had a lower ratio of weight-to-pieces.
