West U Elementary students honor first responders

published Sep. 22, 2011

West University Elementary students recently recognized the military and first responders in a weeklong salute.

Students collected their spare change in support of a local nonprofit charity, Operation American Heroes, which benefits other nonprofits that directly meet the unmet needs of veterans and active military personnel.

Each classroom also adopted a troop from the Fort Hood Army Base, writing letters and sending care packages overseas.

Additionally, a First Responders Fair was held that allowed students to interact with firefighters, police, EMT and other emergency crews, while a military program for grades three through five introduced students to the roles of each of the five branches of the military.
