Texas Children's Cancer Center names outpatient clinic
published Oct. 1, 2012
Texas Children's Hospital announced the naming of its Cancer Center outpatient clinic as the Lester and Sue Smith Clinic at Texas Children's Cancer Center.
According to a hospital press release, the honor was bestowed on the Smiths for their efforts generating more than $41 million in donations to the cancer center. In addition, more than $21 million was donated by the Lester and Sue Smith Foundation.
"We are deeply appreciative of Lester's and Sue's remarkable efforts to help advance research and care for children with cancer," said David Poplack, director of Texas Children's Cancer Center, said in the release. "Few have had a more transformational impact on research that seeks a cure for pediatric cancers, and with their help Texas Children's Cancer Center will continue to lead the way in research and care of childhood cancer."
The Smiths hosted the 2011 "Evening with a Legend" fundraising event, honoring Robert Duvall and showcasing a live on-stage interview by CBS veteran newsman Bob Schieffer. In February of this year, "Evening with Disco Legends" featured performances by disco greats Gloria Gaynor, The Pointer Sisters and Niles Rodgers. The program, underwritten by the Smiths, became the largest single-evening fundraiser in Houston's history.
According to the release, Mr. Smith is a two-time cancer survivor and author of the book "You Gotta Dance Like No One's Watching." He and Mrs. Smith are well-known Texas philanthropists as well as national ballroom dancing champions.
Texas Children's Cancer Center is located at 6701 Fannin St., Houston.
