West U volunteering opportunities

Volunteer Houston has announced the upcoming volunteer opportunities in the West U area.

MONITOR GUARDIANSHIPS in a court-backed program protecting the mentally disabled and the frail elderly. You'll be assigned wards of the court whom you'll visit on an annual basis. You'll review the status of their guardianship cases and report both positive and negative findings back to the court. Visits can take place on weekdays or weekends. Training will familiarize you with the legal process involved in evaluating guardianships.

BUSINESS PROFESSIONALS (active or retired) help small businesses by volunteering for a non-profit agency officially sponsored by the U.S. Small Business Administration. These volunteers can take on a weekly shift counseling with entrepreneurs and would-be entrepreneurs at any of six offices in Houston. Currently, the agency is especially interested in recruiting volunteers with expertise in advertising, banking, information technology, marketing, or sales.

PRIVATE PILOTS can log some flying time while helping people in need. A regional pilots’ network is recruiting volunteer pilots to use their own planes to fly ambulatory medical outpatients from outlying areas to any of a number of greater Houston area airports where other volunteers will take them to their medical appointments or temporary lodgings. Expenses incurred by pilots are tax deductible.
