Book critic today, physician someday
West University Elementary fifth-grader Nora McQueary enjoys dancing, playing basketball, swimming and reading. She was recently selected to write a book review for a soon-to-be-published children’s book that might also become a movie. Nora plans to graduate from the University of Texas, Rice University, Harvard University or Stanford University before attending medical school.
Nora McQueary AGE: 11 GRADE: 5 SCHOOL: West University Elementary, Houston ISD ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Won West University Elementary School Bookmark Contest in second grade; read all 20 Bluebonnet Award Nominee Books in third and fourth grades; qualified for West University Piranhas swim team; Odyssey of the Mind competition state finals; won the annual Christmas tree lighting coloring contest for the City of West University Place CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES: Girl Scouts, Summer Book Club, Piranhas Swim Team, West University Methodist Crossover, basketball, dance and art. FAVORITE CLASS: “My favorite class is science taught by my favorite teacher, Mrs. Pflugfelder. I get to learn how things work and how living organisms adapt to changes to the environment, what things are made of and so on.” FAVORITE BOOK: “My favorite book is the ‘Hunger Games’ series (by Suzanne Collins) because it is suspenseful, romantic, action-packed and just a little bit violent.” WHAT INSPIRES HER: My family inspires me because they set a good example for me, believe in me, and encourage me to try new things and to be the best person I can be.
