MFAH hosting masterpieces from Spain
An exhibit called “Portrait of Spain: Masterpieces from the Prado” will be on display from Sunday, Dec. 16, through Sunday, March 31 at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston.
The exhibit features more than 100 masterworks from the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid. The artists are leading painters spanning four centuries, including Francisco de Goya, El Greco, Jusepe de Ribera and Diego Velázquez. There is an exhibit fee in addition to the regular museum fee.
The Museum of Fine Arts Houston is located at 1001 Bissonnet St., Houston.

Library to host holiday story puppet show
A holiday story puppet show will be presented at the Looscan Neighborhood Library on Wednesday, Dec. 19.
The show will begin at 3:30 p.m. at the library, 2510 Willowick Road, Houston.

Deacons of Deadwood makes donation
Deacons of Deadwood recently donated $10,000 to Workshop Houston, a nonprofit organization that provides children with creative, technical and educational resources.
The motorcycle group rode together to present the check.
The money was raised from the auction of a bicycle built by Participants of Workshop Houston.
“Workshop Houston is an incredible organization and we’re happy to be able to support them,” said Steve Lamb, Deacons of Deadwood president, according to a press release.
Founded in 2002, Deacons of Deadwood is a group of leather-wearing motorcycle enthusiasts. Members ride thousands of miles every year and are firmly committed to raising money for local children’s charities.

The Houston Fire Department is seeking donations for its annual Operation Stocking Stuffer Toy Drive.
New unwrapped toys can be dropped off at any Houston Fire Station from through Dec. 18.

Friendship Circle celebrates Italian Hanukkah
The Friendship Circle of Houston will host a Hanukkah Party from 1:30-3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16 in the Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center.
The event will be an Italian style party with Italian food as well as Chanukah treats and activities.
The event is free, but there is a suggested donation of $10.
The Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center is at 5601 S. Braeswood, Houston.

Bellaire grad completes Navy recruit training
Joshua Nieto of Houston recently graduated from recruit training at the Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill.
Nieto, the son of Mercedes Nieto, is a 2011 graduate of Bellaire High School in Houston.
According to a press release, “Nieto received the early promotion for outstanding performance during all phases of the training cycle. Training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.”
Dr. Herbert Fred earns prestigious Laureate Award
Dr. Herbert Fred, of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston Medical School, has earned the Laureate Award from the Texas Chapter of the American College of Physicians.
Fred has devoted his career of 60 years to medical education.
“It was a wonderful affair, and they treated me royally,” Fred said.
The West University resident received the honor at the Omni Hotel in Fort Worth from Robert Jackson, president of the American College of Physicians.
The Laureate Award, the highest recognition a state chapter can give, honors “those Fellows and Masters of the College who have demonstrated by their example and conduct an abiding commitment to excellence in medical care, education, or research and in service to their community, their chapter and the American College of Physicians.”
Fred joined the Medical School in 1971 and is a professor of internal medicine. He received his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University and completed post-graduate training at the University of Utah.
